Chant Sources Online

  • An Idiot's Guide to Square Notes — an excellent short introduction to reading Gregorian Chant notation.
  • The Church Music Association of America — the sidebar has PDF scans of many old chant books. Among the most interesting are as follows. (Warning: large downloads!)
    • Liber Usualis (1961) — the chants of the Mass and Vespers for all Sundays and most feasts of the year, as well as votive Masses and other common liturgical occasions. Includes a comprehensive introduction in English, the readings and orations of each Mass, appendix of chants for Benediction, and other hours of the Office for important feasts.
    • Graduale Romanum (1961) — includes all Masses of the year. Completely in Latin; excellent typographic quality.
    • Gregorian Missal (1990) (newly available!) — the chants of the Mass for the Novus Ordo, for Sundays and holydays, with English translations. Still in copyright, but made freely available through the kindness of Solesmes monastery.
    • Chants of the Church — short book of popular chants and Mass ordinaries. Basic introduction to singing chant, and inline word-for-word English translations.
    • Versus Psalmorum et Canticorum — book of psalm verses for use with Introit and Communion chants in the Traditional Mass. Really useful book for understanding the structure of psalm tones (fitting the tone to accents, etc.).
  • Chant recordings from St. Benedict's Monastery in Sao Paulo, Brazil — includes most Mass Ordinaries and Propers, together with GIF images of the music notation.
  • Nova Organi Harmonia — organ accompaniment for the entire Graduale Romanum. The page also includes many other accompaniment books and treatises.
  • Jubilate Deo booklet — minimum chant repertoire for the Novus Ordo, published by order of Pope Paul VI.
